Liberty Call is a Veterans open forum peer-to-peer support group composed of fellow Veterans. Liberty Call is a growing community where Veterans with similar experiences come together to provide mutual support, encouragement, and understanding.
Mental Injury verses Mental Illness
Liberty Call treats PTSD as a Mental Injury and not a Mental Illness. Our concept of treating PTSD as a Mental Injury and not a Mental Illness encourages a healing process that group members reach for. Every week, the group has a different host pooled from group members.
This group is completely independent, self funded, no paid staff, nor receive any state or government funding.
Due to bad experiences with the Veterans Administration, their lack of support and votes of the group members, no state Veteran Service Officers (VSO) past or present are permitted to partake. We've never lost any sleep over the decision.
If you are looking for someone to talk to, meet other veterans or even some feedback on a problem, this group is for you. You can even sit on the sidelines and listen to what is on other veterans minds.
If you are new to the group, you must bring a copy of your DD-214 and a picture ID to be able to join in. After two meetings, you will then be issued a "Verified Veteran ID Badge" to enter future meetings. Badge has our logo, photo, name, branch of service, private number of our 24/7 warmline and nothing else. We keep no "numbers served" records and participants only need to prove Veteran status.
This is a casual, hassle free, peer-to-peer, open forum group where we talk about whatever is on everyone's mind. Hot coffee, snacks, bottled water and soft drinks are provided.
Our 'Veterans Peer Support Group" meets every Friday Night at our Veterans office located near Fort Harrison in Lawrence, Indiana. Average in attendance is roughly 30-45 verified Veterans.
A warmline is a phone number you call to have a conversation with someone who can provide support during hard times. A warm line is an alternative to a crisis line that is run by “peers,” generally those who have had their own experiences of trauma that they are willing to speak of and acknowledge.
Unlike a crisis line, a warm line operator is unlikely to call the police or have someone locked up if they talk about suicidal or self-harming thoughts or behaviors. Most warm line operators have been through extreme challenges themselves and are there primarily to listen. A warm line has the purpose of reducing hospitalization and forced treatment, being a cost effective and non-intrusive, voluntary intervention.
Launched in September, 2022, we also have a warmline for Veterans in our Peer to Peer group that provides 24/7 access. Our warmline provides a safe, anonymous and confidential environment to connect with fellow Veterans people who care and are here to listen.
During our weekly group meetings, a verified, Veteran of the group volunteers to carry a special cell phone. This phone is kept close, always on, always carried and always answered, no matter the time of day.
As of date, we are the only all volunteer Veterans warmline in the state of Indiana that provides Veterans a place to talk and connect with another Veteran. Our warmline is the first 24 hours day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year warmline for Veterans.
